Tujia food

Introduction.

The Tujia food is typical and yummy. If you are in China ,you can try these food and you will love it. If not, here are some receipts to introduce how to cook. You can cook the typical food and enjoy these at home.

Tujia tea soup.

It is famous snack in Tujia. In the past, the host would treat the guests with the soup, which is a etiquette. Nowadays, we can enjoy this soup in Tujia restaurant .



How to cook the soup?

The quality of the tea and the heating is crucial to make the soup.

  • First, fried tea till they became light  yellow.
  • Second, add water to the pot. 
  • Third, add in  ginger, onions, garlic and pepper.
  •  Finally, when it is boiled, put some dried rice [the white one in the picture], and dried soybeans.



Tujia pizza

Nowadays ,it is most Tujia people 's favorite breakfast.It is quite cheap and delicious. The price is about 2 RMB .[about $0.5].It is more delicious when you eat the pizza with Soybean milk.


 Ingredients:
flour, baking powder, minced meat, garlic sprouts,
 cumin powder, chili powder,butter,sugar

1.making flour paste:

[a] mixing 1 kg flour,baking powder,and 400 g cold water for 8 hours.
[b]adding 8 kg new flour and 3.5 kg water into [a]

2.making fillings:
5 kg minced meat, 80 g salt,30 g sugar,150 g cumin powder,150 g garlic sprouts, 150 g chili powder.

 3.Combine flour paste and fillings:
The ratio of the paste and fillings is 6:1.
180 g of paste, 15 g fillings insides and 15 g fillings outsides.

4. Baking: 
230 C,10 mins.

Nv'er Hui ---- Valentine's Day of Tujia .

What is Nv'er Hui ?
Nv'er Hui is Tujia Valentine's day, during 7 to 12 July in lunar calendar. The festival stems from Tujia in EnShi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture
[EnShi], which is my hometown.


The old Nv'er Hui ---- street market .

The girls stayed at home nearly all the time. They can only go out freely during the festival. The single would dress themselves up, especially girls.
Girls pretended to sale products on the street market and men would come to buy.



  • When a men try to bargain with the girl, it shows he has a crush on the girl,
  • When the girl does not sale the product ,it shows she feels nothing about the man. [To raise the price quite high is a common way. ]
  • When they make a deal, It means they both want know more about each other and they will leave the market to a less crowded place to chat.


A more wonderful festival

The host will register participants' data and post on board.People can contact the people who reach their requirements.
The government  will throw a big 'party'----
  • advertising, 
  • decorating ,
  • putting on shows 
  • and organizing activities.

I think ,this festival is very worthy visiting or participating. You may find your true love, while you can know more the culture of the Tujia.
Nowadays,Enshi is the only place to celebrate this festival. Apart from the festival, there are plenty of attractions in Enshi.

Tujia custom--The Crying Marriage

Last term break , I went back China and watched the show of crying wedding. As a Tujia people, I feel responsible to spread culture of the Tujia Minority .

What is crying marriage ?

The traditional custom, crying , in Tujia is the beginning of the wedding. Crying is a traditional skill  ------ singing and weeping at the same  time.Since around 12 years old, girls start to learn the skill,crying .It sounds easy to do .  However, I found it was difficult to combine the two things,since I tried.



Since one month before the wedding ,the bride need spend time on crying. Especially on the wedding day, the bride will cry in a more emotional way.

The local people judge brides by levels of crying. If a bride is weak in crying , the residents will look down on her.     I feel so lucky to live in modern society , because I am not good at singing.

What is crying about ?

Brides can cry about ：
  • relatives, 
  • friends, 
  • themselves, 
  • even the ancestors. 
By crying, the bride can express their feelings. eg.
  •  to express their appreciation to their parents, 
  • to get a relief when their roles change ......  
        

Ten sisters' meeting[十姊妹会］

On the wedding day, brides' single sisters or neighbors, usually nine ladies, will come to the wedding ,and cry with the bride. The total number of ladies is 10, so it is called,  Ten sisters' meeting.

I was wondering why the lady  got married though it was so sad. Now, my thought has changed ---- the crying sounds sad ,but indeed it is very sweet .



Where can I watch the show ?

Nowadays, the crying wedding held quite rarely. I only watched the real crying wedding once. If you are interested in the custom,you can find the show in    Tujia Customs Park    , in Hunan province in China.
